Inspiring the Next Generation of Aviation Leaders

One of the greatest investments we can make in aviation isn’t in airplanes, it’s in people.

Last month, the Mississippi Wing of the Commemorative Air Force had the privilege of welcoming more than 40 students from The Piney Woods School to our hangar as part of their Summer Camp Career Day. Throughout the afternoon, students stepped beyond the classroom and into the world of aviation, discovering that there are far more opportunities than simply becoming a pilot.

Representatives from the Mississippi Wing and several local aviation organizations shared their knowledge, personal experiences, and career journeys, giving students an inside look at the many professions that keep aviation moving every day. From aircraft and aviation history, to airport operations, aviation management, flight instruction, engineering, as well as military and civilian aviation,. Each presenter demonstrated that there are countless ways to build a rewarding career in the skies.

The day was designed to be interactive. Students rotated through presentations, explored historic aircraft up close, learned about the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen, handled model airplanes, asked thoughtful questions, and experienced firsthand the excitement that aviation inspires. Watching curiosity turn into enthusiasm reminded all of us why programs like this matter.

For many young people, exposure is everything. You can’t dream about a career you’ve never seen. By opening our hangar doors and connecting students with professionals who have dedicated their lives to aviation, we hope we helped plant seeds that will continue to grow long after the day ended.

Events like these also reflect the mission of the Commemorative Air Force: Educate. Inspire. Honor. While preserving historic aircraft is a cornerstone of what we do, using those aircraft and the stories behind them to educate future generations is equally important.

None of this would have been possible without the volunteers, presenters, and partner organizations who generously gave their time and shared their expertise. Their willingness to mentor and encourage these students is exactly what helps strengthen the future of aviation.

A special thank you goes to The Piney Woods School for spending the day with us and allowing us to be a small part of these students’ educational journey. Their curiosity, engagement, and excitement made the event truly memorable.

Who knows? Among those 40-plus students may be future pilots, mechanics, engineers, airport directors, military aviators, or even future members of the Commemorative Air Force.

We certainly hope to see them back at the airport someday, but this time pursuing the dreams that began with a single visit to our hangar.
