Celebrating Independence Day and America 250 with Our Community
There’s something special about celebrating Independence Day surrounded by the very aircraft that helped defend the freedoms we enjoy today.
As part of the America 250 celebration in partnership with the City of Madison, Mississippi, the Mississippi Wing of the Commemorative Air Force proudly opened our hangar to the public during Madison’s Strawberry Patch Park Independence Day Celebration on July 4. It was an honor to help commemorate our nation’s 250th anniversary by sharing the history, heritage, and legacy of military aviation with our community.
Throughout the day, visitors of all ages explored our collection of historic military aircraft, toured our museum exhibits, and spent time with Wing members who shared the stories behind these remarkable airplanes and the courageous men and women who flew them. From young children seeing a vintage aircraft up close for the very first time to veterans reconnecting with memories of military service and aviation, every conversation reinforced why preserving living history matters.
One of the highlights of the day was watching families experience aviation together. Children climbed into photo opportunities, parents asked thoughtful questions about the aircraft, and grandparents shared stories of their own connections to America’s military and aviation heritage. These moments of curiosity, learning, and remembrance are exactly what our mission is all about.
The Commemorative Air Force exists not only to preserve historic aircraft but to ensure the stories they carry continue to inspire future generations. As our nation begins commemorating America 250, these aircraft serve as powerful reminders of the innovation, sacrifice, and courage that have helped shape our country’s history over the past two and a half centuries.
We are incredibly grateful to the City of Madison for partnering with us as part of this historic celebration and to every volunteer who donated their time to welcome guests, answer questions, and help make the day a tremendous success.
