Bell 47 Helicopter Training and Rides Take Flight in Madison, MS

Recently, the Mississippi Wing of the Commemorative Air Force hosted a special training session on the historic Bell 47 (OH-13) helicopter, led by our friends at the Commemorative Air Force – Bayou State Escadrille. The session not only sharpened our team’s skills in helicopter operations but also gave members of the public a rare and unforgettable flight experience.

Hands-On Training with the Bell 47 (OH-13)

The Bell 47—famous for its bubble canopy and appearances in MASH* and Vietnam-era rescue missions—was the centerpiece of a full-day training exercise. Volunteers from our wing underwent a detailed orientation on ground crew operations, safety procedures, and ride logistics, under the guidance of CAF Bayou State Escadrille pilots and crew.

This training positioned the Mississippi Wing to better assist with Bell 47 flight operations at future events, further supporting the Commemorative Air Force’s mission to preserve and share living history.

Public Rides Bring Smiles and National Attention

Once training wrapped up, we offered public rides from 12:00 to 2:00 PM, giving aviation enthusiasts and families a chance to take to the skies in a legendary helicopter. One of those rides left a lasting impact—not only on the rider, but on our entire wing.
