In a heartwarming blend of aviation and the arts, the Mississippi Wing of the Commemorative Air Force recently hosted the Mississippi Metropolitan Ballet for a special afternoon of live performance and community gathering inside our historic hangar. The event showcased the rich cultural spirit of our region while highlighting the Wing’s growing role as a venue for education, family activities, and connection across generations.
An Afternoon of Elegance and Energy

Guests arrived to the sound of live music, performed just outside the hangar against the backdrop of an open runway and vintage aircraft. Inside, families gathered at tables under the wings of historic planes while children and adults alike explored the space, many visiting for the very first time.
The energy quickly built as the Mississippi Metropolitan Ballet took the stage. Dancers performed a beautiful array of pieces, each choreographed with precision and emotion. The hangar—normally filled with the roar of radial engines—was instead alive with music, movement, and applause.
A Full Community Experience
From food trucks and local vendors to photo ops and family seating areas, the event delivered more than just a performance—it became a full afternoon of culture, history, and family fun. Visitors had the chance to enjoy refreshments, meet Wing members, and explore some of our restored aircraft and WWII-era memorabilia on display.

What made this event particularly meaningful was the intergenerational turnout. It was not uncommon to see grandparents, children, and parents all experiencing the magic of aviation history and live arts under the same roof. The ballet’s young performers inspired children in the audience, while our static aircraft displays reminded guests of the courage and innovation of past generations.
Bridging the Gap Between Arts and Aviation

This collaboration with the Mississippi Metropolitan Ballet is just one example of the Wing’s mission to broaden its community outreach, connect with new audiences, and keep history alive in innovative ways. Hosting a ballet performance among historic warbirds was a powerful reminder that preserving history isn't just about the past—it’s about creating experiences in the present that educate, inspire, and bring people together.
