The mission of the Commemorative Air Force is to Educate, Inspire, and Honor. During this year’s Aviation Discovery Day, those three words came to life in a truly unforgettable way.

On the anniversary of D-Day, the Mississippi Wing of the Commemorative Air Force had the privilege of welcoming 100-year-old World War II veteran Ollie Johnson to the hangar for a very special experience during the annual Aviation Discovery Day event.

Surrounded by family, friends, CAF members, and fellow veterans, Ollie was given the opportunity to speak, answer questions and choose his flight experience. His choice was the Bell 47 helicopter from the Bayou State Escadrille Wing from Hammond, Louisiana, who shared the day along side the Mississippi Wing and the Big Easy wing from New Orleans, Louisiana.

Making the moment even more meaningful was the man at the controls. Longtime CAF member, Army aviation veteran, Mississippi Wing Hall of Fame inductee, and West Point graduate Peter Michael Vozzo (aka Pete) had the honor of serving as Ollie’s pilot for the flight. Ollie’s daughter also joined him for the special moment.

As the Bell 47 lifted off the grass and climbed into the Mississippi sky, it was more than just a helicopter ride. It was a celebration of a generation that answered the call to serve and helped secure the freedoms we enjoy today. For those gathered on the ground, it was impossible not to be moved by the sight of a World War II veteran taking flight once again on a day that marks one of the most significant moments in military history.

Following the flight, Pete presented Ollie with a commemorative patch to remember the experience, a simple but meaningful gesture that reflected the respect and gratitude shared by everyone in attendance.

Moments like these remind us why the Commemorative Air Force exists. Preserving historic aircraft is important, but preserving the stories, memories, and legacies of the men and women who served is even more important. Seeing generations come together around aviation and history creates connections that cannot be replicated in a classroom or museum display.

For many who witnessed the flight, it was an emotional and humbling experience. It served as a powerful reminder that our veterans are not just figures in history books, they are living links to the sacrifices, courage, and determination that shaped our nation.

The Mississippi Wing extends its sincere gratitude to Ollie Johnson for his service, to Pete Vozzo for helping make the experience possible, and to the Bayou State Escadrille for sharing their historic Bell 47 helicopter with our guests.

It was a beautiful moment, a fitting tribute on the anniversary of D-Day, and one that those who witnessed it will never forget.
