Gone West
William P. Joseph, 55, architect, investor, friend to all, and fellow pilot died Wednesday, January 10, 2007. Known as Bill, he perished instantly when his plane, a 1955 Cessna 310, crashed shortly after its noon takeoff from Hawkins Field, according to Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen.
William P. Joseph 1951 - 2007
Bill’s enthusiasm for flying was reflected in his ownership of four aircraft. We’d gotten pretty accustomed to seeing Bill on Sunday afternoon’s at the CAF Hangar with either his Taylorcaft BL-65 or Mooney “Mite”. He was always up for offering a ride but once in the air, riders found it more difficult to finish the flight as Bill loved simply practicing pattern work for hours.
Bill’s friendship will be sadly missed.
Wing Staff Conference
The Wing will be sending a representative to the annual Wing Staff meeting in Midland/Odessa on February 17 and 18, 2007. If anyone else has an interest in attending, please contact COL Bob Bates for details. EVERYONE is encouraged to attend on their own and it is not an expensive event. See the December issue of CONTRAILS for more details. Gone West
Jack S. Patterson, 87, salesman, funeral director, artist, volunteer, really great guy, and most of all a pilot, died Tuesday, December 12, 2006. The visitation was held Friday, December 15th at the Mississippi Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, Bruce Campbell Field in Madison.
Jack Patterson 1919 - 2006
Jack’s love of flying was solidified for life when he graduated from the Army’s Air Corps Advanced Flying School on December 12, 1941 and became an instructor, training pilots to fly the famous P-51 Mustang fighter. He recently reconnected with his beloved P-51 and enjoyed an opportunity to fly the CAF’s Mustang during visits at Bruce Campbell Field. As a member of the Mississippi Wing he enjoyed every minute of telling stories, sharing memories and hitching a flight every once in a while.
Annual Christmas Party
The party was a roaring success thanks to Hazel Dunnam and several others. If you weren’t there, you definitely missed out on our best event of the year!
Beech C-45
Going Twice . . . the Staff is close to its decision regarding permanent transfer of our C-45 to the American Airpower Heritage Museum.
No member willing to accept the role of Aircraft Coordinator has yet to step forward and volunteer. The Aircraft Coordinator is responsible for creating a budget for the plane and then a plan to implement the budget including finding pilot/sponsors, coordinating air show participation, and conducting maintenance activities. Run properly, the plane should come pretty close to paying for itself in static display fees – but this will only be possible with a dedicated and active Aircraft Coordinator.
Hangar Space
As any pilot with an aircraft in the local area knows, hangar space is a VERY rare commodity in the Jackson metro. Our Wing, however, has space to offer. We are currently full, but wanting to re-establish our “waiting list” and make it fair for all those involved. Here are a few basic rules: (1)Aircraft already inside hangar retain priority, but once out start over on waiting list. (2) Owners MUST be COLs in good standing at National and be Mississippi Wing members. (3) Owners MUST furnish Wing with a current certificate of insurance on their aircraft; i.e., no PROOF of insurance = no hangar space. (4) Owners must pay each quarter in advance by 15th of first month in respective quarter. (5) Violations relating to rules 2 through 4 trump rule 1. (6) Warbirds have priority on waiting list and “jump” all others on waiting list when registered with Wing. (7)Vintage aircraft (designed in 1950’s or earlier) have priority on waiting list and “jump” all except warbirds on waiting list when registered with Wing. If you are interested in placing an owned aircraft on the Wing’s waiting list, please submit request along with evidence of rules 1 and 2 to Wing Leader.
