Another year of airplanes, airports, & airshows is in front of us but it comes after an impressive year in 2003.  The past year saw guest speakers from The National D-Day Museum, authors of books on tracking World War II submarine sites in off-shore US waters as well as trips to see A-10 and F-16 gunnery ranges and even an aerial poker run!  And all of this was in addition to the “normal” slate of airshows -- Tupelo, Starkville, Houston, Midland, etc.  If you were not able to celebrate these accomplishments with us at the December party, please see the party pictures at our website.  An excellent time was had by all in attendance.  Special thanks to our hostess and host Jenny & Al Stubblefield.

In accordance with our by-laws, Wing officers were re-affirmed during the membership meeting coinciding with the Christmas party.  During a special staff meeting, COL Bob Bates was selected to take over the duties of Wing Leader for 2004.

In accordance with the CAF directive following the loss of two aircraft this year, COL Paul Barnett led the Wing’s mandatory CAF pilot safety briefing – eight pilots received certificates from National for participating in the training.

We’ll be kicking off the new year with our first meeting on Saturday, January 17th at noon.  The location will be behind the hangar at the Community Center (its well heated!!).

We’d like to acknowledge the support of the Anglo American Lightning Aircraft Organization and their donation of a magnetic compass to our restoration project.  Special thanks to Mr. Robert Simms for coordinating the donation for us.

Work continues on the engine and COL Art Davis has now got the cylinders ready to be glued on (that ought to clue you in to MY mechanical aptitude!).

This next photo was taken on a recent trip to Midland by one of the staff.  It depicts the names of “flying” level aircraft sponsors for our Stinson 10A.  The plaque is prominently displayed at the National Museum in the large aircraft hangar.  If you can’t quite make out the four names already listed, maybe you would consider a “flying” level donation and your name can be more clearly listed as well the possibility of flying the little Stinson when it is completed (very soon)!

There are a few multi-engine pilots working on their C.A.F. checkrides in the C-45 under the watchful eye of COL Ben Cunningham.  These new pilots are COL Mickey Meeks and COL Dan Fabian.  Their CAF qualification in our big blue beast is critical to the Wing’s plans for the upcoming summer so please urge them along when you next see them.

WING DUES:

It’s a new year, please keep in mind that it is time to pay our local Mississippi Wing dues of $35.00 per member.  Wing dues cover administrative expenses through the course of the year.  Hangar rent for non-CAF airplanes covers electricity and land lease payments while PX sales and C-45 show-fees covers the costs of operating and maintaining the Beechcraft.  Costs of the Stinson restoration are covered by special contributions made to that plane.  Thanks go out to each of you for dues support each year . . . this $35 donation is a large support!

I trust everyone has had a chance to visit our wing “on-line” at www.MississippiWingCAF.org.  We thank COL Danny O’Keefe for the work he has done in creating the site and also have a special note of thanks for our “virtual presence” due to web-hosting space donated by AirBase-One, www.airbase1.com. They are a company that specializes in “cybernautical services for aeronautical businesses”.  Please check them out and consider taking any web based business you may have their way – they have done a lot to make our site possible!

The Wing has submitted two entries into the C.A.F.’s national level poster contest.  They are the poster we distributed for our Veterans Day Celebration/Open House and the poster we distributed for our Big Band Dinner Show.
